The Importance of Punctuation - Shilpi Prakash, BhashaLab
Just as grammar is necessary to refine a language, punctuation is essential for the exchange of thoughts and ideas. Punctuation holds immense importance in grammar. A speaker conveys their emotions and thoughts to the listener using various punctuation marks, and it is through these punctuation marks that the exchange of ideas and emotions takes place between the speaker and the listener.
To understand punctuation, it is first important to know the meaning of the term 'pause'. A pause means to stop or halt temporarily. To fully grasp punctuation, understanding its definition becomes essential.
Definition: When a person expresses their emotions or thoughts and pauses after completing a statement, allowing the listener to understand the conveyed emotions, those pauses are represented by punctuation marks, which we call punctuation.
In simple terms, punctuation can be explained as the process of pausing during speech to make the message clear. This act of pausing is what we refer to as punctuation.
Example:
Don’t catch it, let it go.
Catch it, don’t let it go.
In the first sentence, a comma is placed after "don’t catch it," which implies letting it go. In the second sentence, a comma is placed after "catch it," which changes the meaning to emphasize not letting it go.
Through this example, it becomes evident that using punctuation marks in different places within the same sentence can alter its meaning. This is the significance of punctuation.
