‘कोष्ठक’ शब्द ऊर्ध्वाधर गोल कोष्ठकों को संदर्भित करता है । यह एक विराम चिन्ह है जिसका उपयोग वाक्य में अतिरिक्त या अन्यथा अनावश्यक जानकारी को शामिल करने के लिए किया जाता है। दूसरे शब्दों में कहे तो “किसी लेखन में किसी शब्द वाक्यांश या वाक्य के चारों ओर रखे गए दो प्रतिकों में से एक है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि उनके बीच जो कुछ है उसे मुख्य भाग से अलग माना जाना चाहिए” ।
कोष्टक का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित उद्देश्यों के लिए किया जाता है।

गोल कोष्ठक () अंग्रेजी भाषा में सबसे अधिक इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले कोष्ठकों हैं। इन कोष्ठकों का मुख्य कार्य उस व्यक्ति, स्थान है चीज़ के बारे में अतिरिक्त जानकारी देना है जिसके बारे में लेखक बात कर रहा है। कोष्ठकों की एक जोड़ी के भीतर संलग्न जानकारी को वाक्य से हटाया जा सकता है और फिर भी इसका अर्थ निकाला जा सकता है क्योंकि वे अधिकतर केवल अतिरिक्त जानकारी होती है। वाक्यों में गोल कोष्ठक के उपयोग का उदाहरण नीचे दिया गया हैं।
गोल कोष्टक का उदाहरणः-
आपके लिए दिए गए निर्देशों का पालन करना बेहतर है (जब तक कि आप निष्कासित नहीं होना चाहते) ।

वर्गाकार कोष्टक
वर्गाकार कोष्टकों का प्रयोग गणितीय अभिव्यक्तियों और कोडिंग भाषाओं में अधिक देखा जाता है।अंग्रेजी भाषा में, वर्गाकार कोष्टकों का प्रयोग केवल तभी किया जाता है जब आप वक्त के मूल शब्दों को उद्धृत करते समय संशोधित करना चाहते हैं, कोई टिप्पणी या स्पष्टीकरण जोड़ना चाहते हैं या वाक्य में गायब अक्षरों या शब्दों को इंगित करना चाहते हैं।
वर्गाकार कोष्ठक के उदाहरण:-
- डेरिक ने कहा, “उसने [हेड नर्स ने] हमें यही इंतजार करने को कहा” ।
- क्या मेरी मां ने सचमुच कहा था कि उन्हें “यात्रा करना बहुत पसंद है”? यही बात है.

कर्ली ब्रैकेट, जीन्हें फुल ब्रैकेट के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, मुख्य रूप से गणितीय अभिव्यक्तियों, कंप्यूटर प्रोग्रामिंग भाषाओं और संगीत संकेतन में उपयोग किए जाते हैं। व्याकरण में, कर्ली ब्रैकेट या घुंघराले कोष्टक का उपयोग सीमित है। इसका उपयोग केवल वाक्य में सूची के भीतर विकल्पों को दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है।

-मुझे डिटर्जेंट, साबुन, सब्जियां {प्याज, टमाटर, लहसुन, भिंडी, मिर्ची और आलू खाना} पकाने का तेल और फल {सेब संतरे और केले} खरीदने की याद दिलाएं।
-मैंने अपने बेटे के जन्मदिन की पार्टी के लिए अपने रिश्तेदारों, दोस्तों {माजिक, प्रेमी, प्रियंका और सौमिया} और सहकर्मियों को आमंत्रित किया है।
गणितीय में, इन कोष्ठकों का उपयोग किसी समूच्चय को दर्शाने के लिए तथा बीजीय व्यंजकों में सामूहिकरण प्रतिक के रूप में किया जाता है।
उदाहरण के लिएः- { a,b,c,d,e} का अर्थ है एक ऐसा समूह जिसमें a,b,c,d, और e शामिल है।
कोण कोष्टक
कोण कोष्टक विशुद्ध रूप से कोडिंग भाषाओं और गणितीय अभिव्यक्तियों में उपयोग के लिए है। कोण कोष्टक कोण का एकमात्र अन्य उपयोग यूआरएल और ईमेल पते का उल्लेख करना है।

In other words, "A bracket is one of a pair of symbols placed around a word, phrase, or sentence in writing to indicate that what is enclosed should be considered separately from the main part."

In written language, there are four main types of brackets, each serving a different purpose:

1) Parentheses (Round Brackets) ( )
Round brackets are the most commonly used brackets in English. Their main function is to provide extra information about a person, place, or thing in a sentence. The information enclosed within parentheses can be removed without altering the sentence’s meaning, as it is usually non-essential.

It is better to follow the given instructions (unless you want to be expelled).
The Taj Mahal (originally built in the 17th century) is being restored because chemical pollution in the area has caused its marble structure to lose color.
2) Square Brackets [ ]
Square brackets are commonly used in mathematical expressions and coding languages. In English, they are mainly used when modifying the original words of a speaker while quoting, adding comments or explanations, or indicating missing letters or words in a sentence.

Derrick said, “She [the head nurse] asked us to wait here.”
Did my mother really say, “She loves to [travel]”? That’s surprising.
3) Curly Braces { }
Curly brackets, also known as brace brackets or flower brackets, are primarily used in mathematical expressions, computer programming languages, and musical notation. Their use in grammar is limited, and they are mostly used to show options within a list.
🔹 Examples of Curly Braces in Sentences:
Remind me to buy detergent, soap, vegetables {onions, tomatoes, garlic, okra, chilies, and potatoes}, cooking oil, and fruits {apples, oranges, and bananas}.
I invited my relatives, friends {Magic, Prem, Priyanka, and Soumya}, and colleagues to my son's birthday party.

Angle brackets are mainly used in coding languages and mathematical expressions. Their only other formal use is to enclose URLs or email addresses.
