Pedagogy 2 - How to teach pronouns?

Updated: Sep 14

Introduction:

As part of its mission to make quality education accessible to all, BhashaLab has developed a project-based approach to teaching English grammar. This pedagogy emphasizes inclusive and collaborative learning, with a focus on basic and advanced grammar concepts, situational English, creative writing, and international English Olympiad preparation. In this blog post, we will provide an example of how BhashaLab's project-based approach can be used to teach pronouns.

Project Title: "Pronoun Hunt"

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Subject: English Language

Duration: 2 weeks

Learning Objectives:

  1. Students will understand the definition and function of pronouns.

  2. Students will be able to identify different types of pronouns and use them correctly in written and spoken language.

  3. Students will develop effective communication and collaboration skills through group work and class presentations.

Day 1: Introduction

The teacher introduces the concept of pronouns, including their definition and examples. The teacher leads a class discussion about the importance of pronouns in communication.

Day 2-4: Research and Planning

Students work in groups to research different types of pronouns and their usage in different contexts. Each group creates a poster or infographic that summarizes their research findings. Students present their posters to the class and receive feedback.

Day 5-10: Pronoun Hunt

Each group creates a list of common pronouns and identifies examples of them in texts or everyday conversation. Students conduct a "pronoun hunt" where they listen for and identify pronouns in various situations, such as watching a video or having a conversation. Students keep track of their findings and discuss them with their groups.

Day 11-14: Applying Pronouns

Students practice using pronouns in written and spoken language. Students work in groups to create a dialogue or short story that includes various types of pronouns. Each group presents their dialogue or story to the class and receives feedback.

Day 15-16: Reflection and Evaluation

Students reflect on their learning process and identify areas of growth. Students evaluate their group's project and presentation using a rubric provided by the teacher.

Day 17-20: Extension Activities

Students participate in extension activities, such as creating a video or podcast about pronouns or writing a persuasive essay about the importance of using pronouns correctly. Students present their extension activities to the class.

Assessment:

Students are assessed based on their participation in group work, their poster or infographic, their pronoun hunt findings, their dialogue or story, and their extension activity. The teacher uses a rubric to evaluate each aspect of the project, including collaboration, communication, content, and presentation.

  1. Students will develop a deep understanding of the definition and function of pronouns.

  2. Students will be able to identify different types of pronouns and use them correctly in written and spoken language.

  3. Students will develop effective communication and collaboration skills through group work and class presentations.

  4. Students will apply their knowledge of pronouns in creative writing and other extension activities.

  5. Students will receive personalized feedback from their teacher through the use of video feedback.

  6. Students will benefit from a multilingual approach, with a focus on English grammar in Hindi for non-native English speakers.

  7. Students will have the opportunity to compete in the International English Olympiad and improve their English language skills.

Conclusion:

BhashaLab's project-based approach to teaching pronouns is just one example of how this pedagogy can be used to create an engaging and effective learning experience for students. By emphasizing collaboration, creativity, and real-world application, BhashaLab is helping to prepare students for success in school and beyond.
