शर्वः

ईश्वरः शर्व ईशानः शङ्करश्चन्द्रशेखरः।

शर्वः इति नाम अमरकोशे आगच्छति। तत्र शिवस्य नामावलिसु शर्वः इति समानार्थकरूपेण आगच्छति। शर्वः इति शब्दस्य यथार्थः “शर्वति हिनस्ति इति” नाम यः बाणेन हन्ति नाशं करोति सः। किन्तु अत्र एतद् नाम शङ्करस्य कृते प्रयुक्तम् अतः “यः जगत्कल्याणार्थं बाणेन वधं करोति सः” इदृशः अर्थः सुकरः भवेत्। उपरि उल्लिखिता कण्डिका ‘अमरकोशः’ इति संस्कृतकोशात् उद्धृता अस्ति।

सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुः भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः।

अत्र तु सैव शब्दः विष्णुसहस्रनामसु अपि अस्ति। तत्र विष्णुः इति तस्य अर्थः। अतः शर्वः इति नाम शिवस्य अपि निर्देशं करोति तथा विष्णोः अपि निर्देशं करोति। तेन हरिहरयोः ऐक्यमेव गोचरः। सर्वमुख्यकोशेषु एते एव अर्थाः दत्ताः सन्ति।

The name 'शर्वः' (Śarvaḥ) appears in the Amarakosha, a classic Sanskrit lexicon. In this lexicon, 'Śarvaḥ' is listed as one of the names of Shiva, meaning "the one who destroys or kills with an arrow" (शर्वति हिनस्ति इति). In this context, however, the name represents Shiva as "the one who destroys for the welfare of the world."

The verse 'सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुः भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः' (Sarvaḥ Śarvaḥ Śivaḥ Sthāṇuḥ Bhūtādirnidhiravyayaḥ) also includes the name Śarvaḥ in the Vishnu Sahasranama (The Thousand Names of Vishnu), where it refers to Vishnu. Thus, Śarvaḥ symbolizes both Shiva and Vishnu, illustrating the unity between Hari (Vishnu) and Hara (Shiva).

This passage from Amarakosha highlights the dual significance of Śarvaḥ, a name that represents the unity between the two deities. The interpretation is affirmed in all major Sanskrit dictionaries.

शाश्वतः

'अव्युच्छिन्नास्ततस्त्वेते सर्गस्थित्यन्तसंयमाः । अतः सदा प्रवाहत्वात् नित्यः शाश्वत उच्यते॥' निरुक्तिः

अर्थः - एतस्याम् व्याख्यायां विश्वस्य नित्यत्त्वं दर्शितम्। विश्वस्य निर्माणं तथा तस्य नाशः एतत् चक्रं अबाधितं नित्यम् चलति। तत् नित्यं चक्रं शाश्वतम् अस्ति। अतः शाश्वतं नाम सृष्टीचक्रम्।

Meaning - The verse speaks of the perpetual cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction in the universe, which are uninterrupted and, due to their continuous nature, are regarded as eternal and everlasting.

“प्रवृत्तिश्च निवृत्तिश्च नियतः श्वाश्वतो ध्रुवः ॥”

अर्थः - शाश्वतः नाम निश्चितः। प्रकृतेः निश्चितं चक्रम् एव शाश्वतम्।

Meaning- This verse emphasizes the continuous and inevitable cycles of action (engagement) and cessation (disengagement) in the universe, which are fixed and eternal, representing the ongoing rhythm of life and the cosmos.

नित्यम्, सतते नित्ये शाश्वतः।, सनातनः, चिरस्थायी।

अर्थः - सातत्यं, निरन्तरता।

शाश्वतानश्वरे नित्यं ध्रुवं स्थेयस्त्वतिस्थिरम् ।

स्थास्नु स्थेष्ठं तत्कूटस्थं कालव्याप्येकरूपतः ॥ १४५३ ॥

Meaning - This verse reflects the philosophical idea that within the transient and impermanent aspects of existence, there is an underlying eternal and unchanging reality. This eternal reality is supremely stable, immovable, and pervades all of time, remaining unaltered in its essence.

तथा च शिवः, विष्णुः, वेदव्यासः, सूर्यः, स्वर्गः, पृथिवी

Meaning - Shiva, Vishnu, Vyasa, the Sun (Surya), Heaven (Svarga), and the Earth (Pṛthivī).

English Dictionary Meaning - The one who is permanent, the one who is immortal, eternal, perpetual, constant continual.
