Baby Names and their Meanings - 1 - Mrunal Patwardhan

We will begin with an ode to Lord Vishnu.

शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं

विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम्।

लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यं

वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम्।।

Meaning:

यः शान्तिः अस्ति, यः भुजगे निद्राति, यस्य नाभितः कमलं विकसति, यः देवानां श्रद्धास्थानम् अस्ति, यः विश्वस्य आधारः,यः गगनसमानः, यस्य वर्णः मेघइव श्यामः अस्ति, यस्य अङ्गानि पवित्राणि सन्ति, यः लक्ष्म्याः पतिः अस्ति, यस्य नयने कमलदलसमाने स्तः, यस्य ज्ञानार्थं योगिजनाः ध्यानं कुर्वन्ति।अहं तं सर्वलोकस्य नाथं विष्णुं वन्दे।

He is calm and peaceful, resting on a serpent. From his navel, a lotus blooms. He is worshipped by the gods and is the foundation of the entire universe. His form is as vast as the sky, and his complexion is dark like the clouds. His body is pure, and he is the husband of Lakshmi. His eyes are like lotus petals, and yogis meditate to gain his wisdom. I bow to Vishnu, the Lord of all worlds.

अस्माकम् नूतनोपक्रमे सर्वेषां स्वागतम्। प्रस्तुता लेखमाला बालकानाम् शुभनामानि तथा तेषां अर्थं निवेदयन्ति। साम्प्रतम् मातापितरौ बालकनाम्नः अन्वेषणे अतीव उत्साहं दर्शयन्ति। स्वबालकस्य नाम भिन्नं भवेत् इति विचारेण तौ विविधानि साईट्स पश्यतः। तत्र नामानि दृष्टवा तानि एव नामानि निश्चित्य नामकरणं कुरुतः। कदाचित् तानि नामानि अथवा तेषाम् अर्थः यथायोग्यः न प्रतीयते। अतः प्रस्तुते उपक्रमे मातापितरौ अर्थपूर्ण-नामानि लभेताम् इति शुभेच्छाअस्ति।

हिन्दुसंस्कृतिमध्ये बालकः तु श्रीकृष्णस्य एव रूपम् अस्ति इति वयं मन्यामहे। तथा च अद्य जन्माष्टमी अपि अस्ति। अतः बालं मुकुन्दं स्मृत्वा अस्यां शुभतिथौ एव अस्य उपक्रमस्य प्रथमं सोपानं प्रस्तौमि।

Name 1:

हृषीकेशः

विष्णुः। हृषीकाणामिन्द्रियाणाम् ईशः। इन्द्रियाणि यद्वशे वर्तन्ते स परमात्मा। हृष्टं जगत् प्रीतकराः केशाः रश्मयः अस्य हृषीकेशः। नाम सः एव सूर्यः तथा चन्द्रः।

The one who controls all the senses and gives light to them, making him their lord. It also means the source of rays or joy, representing the Sun and the Moon. It is believed that the supreme lord is present in the form of the Sun and the Moon.

नामकरणसमये उपसुक्तश्लोक (Verse recited during the naming ceremony:)

विष्णुर्नारायणः कृष्णो वैकुण्ठो विष्टरश्रवाः।

दामोदरो हृषीकेशः केशवो माधवः स्वभूः।।

Please note:

साम्प्रतं जनेषु ‘ऋषीकेशः’ इति नाम लेखनं प्रचलितम्। किन्तु संस्कृतभाषायाम्’ ऋषीक’ इति शब्दः न दृश्यते। एषः शब्दः निरर्थकः एव। ‘ऋषीकेशः’ इति नाम्नः अर्थः ऋषीणां केशाः इति एव भवति। तत् अर्थः बालकनामकरणार्थं योग्यः नास्ति। वास्तवे ‘हृषीक’ इत्येव संस्कृतशब्दः, यस्य अर्थः’ इन्द्रियः’ इति अस्ति। अतः हृषीकेशः नाम ‘इन्द्रियाणां देवः’ इति भवति।

Many people write the name as "ऋषीकेश," which is quite popular. However, the word "ऋषीक" has no meaning in Sanskrit and "ऋषीकेश" would simply mean "hair of Rishis." In contrast, "हृषीक" is a meaningful word in Sanskrit, where "हृषीक" means "sense organ." Therefore, "हृषीकेश" correctly means "Lord of all the senses."

Name 2:

अनिरुद्धः

न निरुद्ध्यते असौ। न केनापि प्रादुर्भावेषु निरु-ध्यते। तस्मात् सृष्टिः भवति यथा, - “तमसो ब्रह्मसम्भूतं तमोमूलामृतात्मकं। तद्विश्वभावसंज्ञान्तं पौरुषीं तनुमाश्रितम् ।। सः अनिरुद्ध इति प्रोक्तस्तत् प्रधानं प्रचक्षते। श्रीविष्णुसहसहस्रनामसु एकम् अनिरुद्धः इति नाम अस्ति। श्रीकृष्णस्य पौत्रस्य नाम अपि अनिरुद्धः आसीत्।

The one who cannot be obstructed or resisted by anyone. He rules over our minds and all senses. He is irresistable / unavoidable like the will of a God. This name also appears in Vishnusahasranam. Aniruddha is also Shri Krishna’s Grandson.
